An abstract is a brief summary of a research article, thesis, review or any in-depth analysis of a particular subject or discipline, and is often used to help the reader quickly ascertain the paper's purpose. When used, an abstract always appears at the beginning of a manuscript, acting as the point-of-entry for any given scientific paper or patient application. Abstraction and indexing services are available for a number of academic disciplines, aimed at compiling a body of literature for that particular subject.
Writing an Abstract:
-Follow themes and methods.
-Putting down as much information to make people understand what you intend to do.
-Writing something that will give you a broad range for the project.
Abstract Example:
...using findings from previous maps:
'Conservation':
The theme for this project is the act of conservation. Conservation is the act or process of conserving. The area of conservation I aim to document is the conservation of African wildlife. My aim is to raise awareness of the protection, preservation, management and restoration of wildlife and natural recourse's in Africa.
I will create an online and offline campaign to raise awareness and encourage people to get involved in conservation.
I will document existing campaigns and record statistics of animal cruelty and deforestation.
I will also travel to Africa to visit the most affected areas and document my findings through photography and video footage to highlight the need for conservation.
I will also investigate what the future holds if nothing is done and how a campaign such as this can be beneficial.
'Exposure':
The theme for this project is 'Exposure'. Young designers find it increasingly difficult to start working in an industry and gain vital work experience. Any company that is looking to employ a new recruit normally ask for at least two years work experience, but where do you start? I aim to create a website to help young designers get vital exposure and connections to companies within the industry. I will create an online service allowing post-graduate designers to showcase their work and have links to their personal website or online portfolio. Companies within the industry that are interested in recruiting young talent can then register to the service and have access to students work and contact details.
I will investigate existing website that promote the same concept and document the need for such a service. I will also have to visit universities and companies within the industry to record recent post graduate employment.
'Psychological Phenomena':
The theme for this project is the psychological phenomena of 'Deja vu'. The term "déjà vu" describes the experience of feeling that one has witnessed or experienced a new situation previously, a sense of familiarity. I aim to create the experience of 'Deja vu' within a digital format; this could be a flash interface and/or a motion graphics piece. I will also attempt to answer the question of whether 'Deja vu' is simply a trick of the mind or something more sinister.
I will investigate the history of this Psychological Phenomena and the reasons why some of us experience it. I will also investigate how many people experience 'Deja vu', how regularly it occurs and situations in which people experience it. I will record my findings and produce a representation of the experience of 'Deja vu'.
'Online service - Tradesmen':
The theme for this project is a simple online service to find local tradesmen. I aim to create an online service that doesn't currently exist but could be very helpful to customers in need of help and the companies providing it. I will create brand identity and possible promotional pieces both on and off line.
Whether at home or at work, at some point you will need an electrician to come and repair the television or a plumber to fix that dipping tap in the kitchen. Tradesmen are constantly in high demand and I aim to create an online service that makes it easier to find a tradesmen in your local area by simply typing in your post code. I will create a conceptual website that allows users to ask for content meeting specific criteria by finding a list of tradesmen that match the users postal area. I will also include a five star rating system allowing you to post comments and recommendations to distinguish good service providers with rouge traders. I will investigate similar web services and record the demand for such a website. I will also contact tradesmen and similar companies to document their opinion on the concept.
